Geography is the limit of the ability to understand.

What which we see on a map, especially on antique maps, is not the earth, but the profile of our social and religious organizations, the profile of our fears.

The place is un the Balkans, which in the Europe of the 20th century represents the failure of the instruments of comprehension and geographic control. For the traveler with a weak sense of orientation the metaphor of geographic imprecision comes easily.
